After the great migration in 5th century and the intruding of Slavic tribes into Europe in the 7th century, a kind of more peaceful period began.

Probably the need for more food made cultivation of the land necessary. Warriors began to work on the fields, huts were built to spend rainy and cold days and pantries to store grain and corn for the winter.

It’s an interesting question: Why at that time did people create a country or other kind of state organization?

I’m quite sure that it wasn’t the elders of some villages coming together and deciding to found a nation.

It could have begun somehow like this:

One village fought against another village because of water, land and animals. The loser submitted to the other so that the chief of the victorious village had the number of warriors of two villages under his command. Next, they attacked a third village and won because they outnumbered it. The losers always submitted and wanted to pillage on their turn defeating the next village in their neighbourhood.

That way, it went on like an avalanche until they had to confront another avalanche of warriors.

Of course, we don’t have any kind of written documents of that time. Therefore, we must begin with two kingdoms interesting for our studies.

- the Franconian Empire

- Poland

Charles Martel reigned from 715 to 741 and defeated the Arabs in the Battle of Poitiers in 732. His successor was his son, Pepin the Short, from 751 until 768. His successor was his son, Charlemagne (Charles the great), from 768 to 814.

The history of Poland begins with Duke Mieszko I reigning from sometime before 963 until 992. His successor was his son, Duke Bolesław I the Brave (r. 992–1025).

In my next message, I will write about what these people did to deserve the name “great or Duke” and so on.

During my studies about Charles Martel, it occurred to me that I didn’t know much about where he came from. Therefore, I thought it appropriate to go back in time again to the end of the great migration period of the 5th century.

Many smaller kingdoms and principalities were formed, every strong man in any tribe made an effort to defeat his neighbour. Shortly, this must have been a very tough time, especially for small people.

One of these strong men or families were the Merovingian. They first appeared as "Kings of the Franks" in the Roman army of northern Gaul (north France today) (They fought for the Romans, for example, against the Huns.). By 509, they had united all the Franks and northern Gaulish Romans (north France today) under their rule. They conquered most of Gaul, defeating the Visigoths (507) (south of France and west of Spain today) and the Burgundians (534) (east France and west Switzerland today), and also extended their rule into Raetia (537) (which is a part of east Switzerland today). In Germania (which means the right side of the river Rhine), the Aleman (today, it’s Rhineland-Palatinate / Rheinlandpfalz), Bavarian (today Bavaria) and Saxons (today, central Germany) accepted their lordship.

Funny: They were the first “Hippies” because they liked long hair. For example, a king could be overthrown by cutting his hair (a bit like Samson and Delilah).

Charles Martel, king from 715 to 741, was the descendant of one of those old upper-class families amongst Germanic tribes and inherited a vast empire.

In my next message, I will write more about Charles Martel.

When Charles Martel’s father, Pepin, had died, a civil war broke out 715 – 718. Pepin had had many wives and concubines but the line between wife and concubine was not always clear. That was the reason why Charles Martel first had to defeat his contester.

Of course, even a king has to have supporters. It’s very interesting that already (or still?) at that time the Catholic church played not a decisive but important role. Probably, because of the increasing importance of administration.

When barbaric Germanic tribes conquered a part of the Roman empire, normally they left administration as it was because they were only interested in getting tributes from the inhabitants.

However, the Roman-Catholic church promised these tribes that they would serve them if the Germanic tribes didn’t harm the church, her belongings and institutions.

It’s very astonishing that even today the border lines of dioceses (church administration districts) are still the same as they were during the Roman empire. Of course not in Poland or north Germany because these territories were not part of the Roman empire.

Even after the civil war, 715 – 718, Charles constantly had to fight his enemies within the realm.

Some of Charles Martel’s adversaries in south of the empire even made an alliance with the Moors, Umayyad and Arabs, who had by then conquered nearly whole Spain and Portugal, to help them against Charles Martel.

This led to the battle of Tours in 732, some 200 km south-west from Paris where he defeated the united Moors and southern Franconian lords.

Then, another war against Burgundy, near the Swiss border, from 732 – 737.

Between 737 and 741, till his death, he enlarged the empire in the south, between today’s Spanish border and Marseilles.

The summary of his life is many battles and wars and the empire was divided among his adult sons after his death: to Carloman, he gave Austrasia, Alemannia, and Thuringia (today’s north France and Germany), and to Pippin the Younger Neustria, Burgundy, Provence, and Metz and Trier in the "Mosel duchy" (today’s central and south France).

I hope you I don’t bore you with all these details!

My biggest problem here is not really the circumstances of not earning money, sleeping with several people in a big room, like a dormitory. I spent 5 years in prison and this place here is a paradise compared to prison. I get food as much as I want and I can prepare it myself. Even cigarettes are for free. I can take a shower whenever I want. The Afternoons are more or less free and I can do what and go where I want to, I work 3 hours a day in average. There is a small lake around here and I can swim and train as much as I want to, I’m as brown as an African. I really can’t complain about these kind of things.

However, it’s this intellectual desert and emptiness I’m in here and you are the only person I’m talking / writing to. I’m telling you what I think about, what goes on in my mind.

Maybe, it’s a bit like it was in prison. There was no sense in trying to change the world or think about one’s future. The guards, the other inmates and the walls were my reality and so I took intellectual refuge in books and science.

I must admit I’m still not good enough and able to write a book about history of my own taste. I love history but I adore especially the connection of events and to find out what could have been behind all these data and information. All these data about years and names! What do they tell us, what can we learn from them or what kind of conclusion for our future can we get out of it at all?

My next message will be about the sons and of Charles Martel, Pepin the Short and Carloman.

It’s raining, therefore I’m sitting on the veranda reading a book. From time to time, the book sinks onto my lap and I dream of you!

I am as poor as you and I feel as a prisoner. Without money I can't come to you.  I am very sad woman. People around me don't understand me. My only pleasure is reading your messages

Why do you say we are poor? You have me and I have you!

And we are still just over fifty which leaves still nearly fifty years till hundred years because I want to live a hundred years.

The owner here will hardly get a cheaper workforce than me and you still have your workplace. Therefore, I say that we can wait for the health crisis to improve because I don’t really know how I could get across the border now under these present circumstances.

The longer we keep in touch the stronger our commitment and relationship.

Don’t be sad but write to me as often as you can! Your tender words do wonders to me!

When Charles Martel died, the realm contained more or less the territory of today’s France without Bretagne but with today’s German Saarland and parts of Rhineland-Palatinate. History books inform us that he had defeated nearly all inner and foreign enemies of his territory and stabilized his power.

But what did that mean to us, small people?

He needed a big army and had to show that belonging to his circle meant prosperity. Therefore, his army consisted of henchman, who did everything to seek his goodwill. Seeking the goodwill of the powerful is a bit like a Mafia-system and means to help the powerful to grow their wealth. However, where did they take this wealth from? Of course, they pillaged the villages of small peasants.

He had many wives and therefore many sons and daughters. And after his death, his realm was divided mainly between his two sons, Pepin the Short and Carloman.
